Homeless sound

Where is a sound’s home? In the ear that perceives it or in the instrument that brings it to life? In the audience or in the performer? With Mahler’s 5th Symphony there are multiple answers. Is its home the Visconti film »Death in Venice«, which made the Adagietto more popular than any other record? Is it Cologne, where the work was first performed? Is it Vienna, where the composer lived and worked? Or perhaps the Vienna Philharmonic, whose playing makes every note sound at home? Mahler’s music is a blend of childhood memories of military bands, Bohemian folk music, audible traces of Jewish culture, German Romanticism and impressions of Chinese lyricism. Multicultural, yes. But homeless?
