Anthems
The Hungarian Péter Eötvös is highly influential as a composer, as a conductor and as a university teacher. His musical career has taken him to all the major important interfaces of recent music history. This performance of Stockhausen’s HYMNEN (Anthems), one of the central works in new music, now rests in his capable hands. Stockhausen collected national anthems from all over the world and grouped them according to region. Not a collage but a synthesis and an interplay between different musical cultures, between material and modulation, between electronics and acoustics. Is this a removal of the world’s barriers or the negation of national identity? Visionary or politically naive? Péter Eötvös and musikFabrik provide the answer. Not once but twice: the concert opens and closes with this work – a double opportunity for listeners to decide.
