MusikTriennale Köln

There is nothing new about a collaboration between a saxophone trio like Jungle Boldie and a classical woodwind quintet like Calefax. But ever since their first joint project – a recording of Duke Ellington’s »Far East Suite« and »River Suite« – these two ensembles from Holland have proved to be a winning formula. Casting their sights beyond some simplistic crossover, both sides are passionate about extending classical jazz material by using the resources of contemporary improvisation and new music performance techniques. Here the »Far East Suite« is the point of departure for a tour of the Asian soundscape, a dip into a still unfamiliar »foreign« musical cosmos, exploring and experimenting with this fascinating music.
